Best thing I ate this week: Putu Piring rice cakes

$

'Best thing I ate' is a series where we share the best things we have eaten around Singapore. Read more here.

What: Putu Piring rice cakes ($2 for 4 pieces)

Where: Ole Ole, 21 Baghdad Street, Singapore 199660

When those in the know mention the saucer-shaped Putu Piring rice cake, they would invariably rave about how good the Haig Road ones

Indeed, they are. But sometimes the thought of travelling all the way to the legendary Haig Road stall in Geylang and having to join the long queue there can be a dissuading factor.

Enter an elderly Malay couple offering the same old-world snack in the heart of bustling Arab Street district. They operate inside Ole Ole, a new cafe which specialises in local drinks and snacks.

Photo: Chen Jingwen

On a busy day, you would still have to join the queue and wait for the soft cakes to be steamed after they are made fresh on the spot.

Trust me, it's worth the wait. But first, order the delicious durian chendol or soup sop as they're good too.

The four Putu Piring cakes arrive, wrapped in a paper packet, which allows them to absorb the aroma of the pandan leaves on top of them.

Though smaller than the Haig Road ones, the piping hot cakes are nevertheless a mouthwatering delight with the grated coconut and the generous layer of melted palm sugar inside.

Just perfect when you need a tummy filler on a lazy afternoon.

The writer paid for the food reviewed.

He shone and dazzled through his stellar career in Singapore's legal service. The peak of his 21-year career, was when he founded the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD), charged with the duty of bringing commercial criminals to task. It all came crashing down in 1991, when he was probed and subsequently convicted of commercial crimes.

Following his first conviction, Glenn Knight was disbarred from legal practice in 1994. Four years later, he was convicted again for misappropriating CAD funds during his stint as director. It took more than a decade before his application to be reinstated was granted in 2007, this made him the sixth lawyer to be reinstated to the Law Society in Singapore.

Speaking from his small office in Toa Payoh North, Glenn Knight, now 71 years old, is mellow, soft spoken and pensive. He takes a look back at his fall from grace, and shares his thoughts on the path travelled.

A 23-year-old Singaporean tourist died after reportedly jumping from the fifth storey of his hotel in Bali on May 6 at 2am.

Ong Chee Seng had allegedly been hallucinating after consuming magic mushrooms.

According to Tribun Bali, the police said the man's friend had tried to stop him but lost control after the victim broke free.

The victim's friend, Lee Jun Yu, who was also his classmate, said that they had bought a magic mushroom drink outside their hotel.

The victim had mixed his magic mushrooms with orange juice while Lee mixed his with chocolate.

Shortly afterwards, Ong said he wanted to jump but Lee tried to hold him down.

A security guard reported that he heard a crash at 2.15am.

The victim was found in grey boxers and a blue T-shirt.

His legs and arms were bent at awkward angles and he was bleeding from the mouth.

He died upon impact and his body was sent to BIMC Hospital in Kuta after an ambulance arrived at the scene half an hour later.

The Singaporean duo had arrived in Bali on May 5 and had planned on checking out yesterday (May 7).

The local police are investigating the case.

Denpasar Police Commissioner Hadi Purnomo said that law enforcement officers had been making efforts to eradicate the magic mushroom trade in Bali, but it's been "quite tricky".

Magic mushrooms have been re-classified as 'type 1' narcotics, making them illegal.

SINGAPORE - Dating company, Lunch Actually Group, has officially acquired Indonesia's biggest online dating service, Setipe.

A press release today (May 8) stated that this acquisition signifies a collaborative partnership between South East Asia's largest dating company Lunch Actually Group and Setipe as the largest player in Indonesia.

Together, they will strengthen their foothold in the country by providing a holistic dating solution to address the needs of all serious singles in Indonesia - to help them find love.

Founder and CEO of Setipe, Razi Thalib, and his team at Setipe will join the 110 people-strong team of associates (also known as Cupids and Transformers) at the Lunch Actually Group.

According to Thalib: "After 3 years in operation, Setipe has gained impressive traction and growth but for us to monetise effectively, Indonesia still requires strong offline services due to low credit card penetration rates and less than half the population having Internet access.

"Lunch Actually Group brings tremendous value to the table by leveraging their vast experience, regional access and together with Setipe provide a comprehensive portfolio of dating services - from offline matchmaking, online and mobile dating app, as well as date coaching services."

With this acquisition, Setipe will come under Lunch Actually Group's stable of brands including Lunch Actually, esync, LunchClick and Lunch Actually Academy. The Group will serve a growing number of 2 million singles in Indonesia. Thalib will remain as CEO of Setipe and will also head up Lunch Actually Group's Indonesian operations.

Violet Lim, CEO and co-founder of Lunch Actually Group said, "We are excited about the opportunities opened up by this acquisition and we are confident that we are now in an even stronger position to serve singles in Indonesia. We look forward to quadrupling our revenues in Indonesia by end this year and accelerating our goal of creating 1,000,000 happy marriages!"
