Young doctors in Singapore feel 'burnt out', hit hard by stress

Single mother claims insurance agent proposed on first date, bedded her and took her money

0
0

A single mother claimed that an insurance agent charmed her into having sex and lending him money after proposing to her at their first date.

The single mother, Ms Liu, told Shin Min Daily News that she had met the man through an app, and the two decided to meet up in person after one month of chatting.

Ms Liu said: "On our first date, he took out a ring and proposed to me, saying that I was 'the one'.

"I was flattered and shocked."

Ms Liu said that the man later explained that he had originally intended to propose to his ex-girlfriend with said ring, but the two broke up unexpectedly.

He has since kept the ring by his side.

She continued: "He told me that he would design a new ring for me to show me his sincerity, so I did not take the ring."

However, Ms Liu added, it was just the beginning of a nightmare.

When the two met up in July for the third time, the man told Ms Liu that he had lost all his clients' money in a bad investment, and had to borrow $1,700 from her.

Said Ms Liu: "He promised to return the money in four days and refused to write an IOU.

"When it was time for him to pay up, he repeatedly delayed and came up with all sorts of excuses.

"Then he became uncontactable."

According to Ms Liu, it has been four months since, and she has not gotten back a single cent.

She lodged a police report on Aug 30, 2017.

In response to media queries, a police spokesman confirmed the incident.

When reporters contacted the man, he denied the allegations and said that Ms Liu had attempted to seduce him instead.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, insisted that he had not borrowed any money from Ms Liu.

Instead, he claimed that he had lent her more than $2,000, which she used to purchase various furniture and items.

He added: "I am financially stable, and I just bought a car, which I paid for in entirety.

"My monthly salary is more than $10,000, so I wouldn't need to borrow money.

"It was her who was trying to seduce me from the start.

"She has cheated a lot of men before me too, and I definitely wasn't interested in her."

He also denied proposing to Ms Liu or seducing her.

In response to Ms Liu calling the police, the man said that he has taken legal actions, but did not show any evidence of having made a police report.

Singaporean gets charged $1.3K for Uber rides she didn't take - and she's not the only one

0
0

Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Grab have brought us much convenience, both in terms of getting a ride anywhere and also payment methods.

With most of us linking our credit cards to our accounts, paying for a ride is effortless, and we can get that slight 'kick' from getting off the vehicle #likeaboss.

But this convenience also comes with the additional risk of having our details being compromised, and this was what Singaporean Uber user Jenna Lim experienced.

on Facebook

***Update as of 6:45pm*** Uber has reached out to me and they mentioned that they will be reviewing this incident and...

Posted by Jenna Lim on Sunday, 19 November 2017

Here's what she wrote in the post:

"Guys, please be careful when adding your debit or credit card to Uber Account. This is what I woke up to. A negative amount in my bank account.

"I got a huge shocked and went to check on my transactions. Turns out all transactions were made from Uber and amount is in USD. More than 30 transactions were made from 13 November amounting to a total of $1.3k +. It would have been worse if I didn't check my bank statement. Just 5 days and 1.3k gone. Wow I can't believe that Uber's privacy security is so bad???

"I believe someone from the US hacked into Uber's security system and attained my bank account info. Also, I can't even delete the card payment in Uber Account. This is super ridiculous. So friends, please try to use cash to pay for your trips instead.

"Lost all my trust in Uber already.. really shocking experience….."

The screenshots accompanying the post reveal a slew of transactions being made in a span of 4 days (16 Nov - 19 Nov).

What's notable is that the transactions made were all in US dollars, and amounted up to almost S$700.

SHE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE

The comments section on her post also revealed that she's not the only one who's had this nasty experience, as some also came out to share their own experiences.

WHY WERE THERE NO NOTIFICATIONS

With every trip taken with Uber, an email would be sent after the ride ends as a 'log' for the user.

For Jenna, she didn't receive any emails about these trips, which led her to come to the conclusion that it was only her bank account details that were compromised, and not her account.

Another commenter also brought up that for her bank - we're guessing CIMB based on the hotline in the screenshot - she gets an SMS notification whenever a trip (regardless of amount) is charged to her card.

Asking around, I realised that a good number of my colleagues don't get these SMS notifications from their bank or Uber, and only receive the email as 'evidence'.

Personally, I don't receive SMS notifications about charges to my card after the trips either.

And I'm not going to lie, but I immediately went to check my bank account for any suspicious activity after reading her post.

Perhaps what we should be asking is not just why credit card theft like this seems to be happening rather frequently, but also why some are not getting notifications whenever their cards are charged.

Regardless, if this story scared you, we suggest that you turn on notifications from the app and your bank ASAP.

Singapore's Committee for Private Education released the results of its Private Education Institution (PEI) Graduate Employment Survey (GES) on November 15, finding that the overall employment rate of fresh graduates from PEIs six months after their final examinations was 84.3 per cent, including full-time, part-time, freelance, and contract work.

Surveying students from 40 PEIs, the survey was conducted in partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore, where 32 per cent of the 11,003 graduates invited shared responses. Taking into account just full-time permanent employment, the employment rate was 60.1 per cent. In comparison, the corresponding figures for autonomous universities (AU - NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT) were 89.6 per cent and 79.9 per cent respectively.

The survey also showed that the median gross monthly salary of the graduates from PEIs in full-time permanent employment was S$2,550, compared to that of fresh AU graduates at S$3,325, and that of fresh and post-National Service polytechnic graduates at S$2,180 and S$2,517 respectively.

The following are the median gross monthly salaries for fresh graduates in PEIs:

Singapore Institute of Management - S$2,600

Kaplan Higher Education Academy - S$2,500

Raffles College of Higher Education - S$2,400

ERC Institute - S$2,550

Further, there are PEIs with less than 10 fresh graduate respondents, either due to small enrolment or low response rate. While their results are not reported, the PEIs are listed below.

PEIs with 10 or more graduates, but fewer than 10 respondents:

Auston Institute of Management

BMC International College

Dimensions International College

First Media Design School

Brandon Lee, Director-General (Private Education), SkillsFuture Singapore, commented on future planning for private education in Singapore, "The Committee for Private Education will also continue to review its requirements periodically to ensure that consumers' interests are protected and PEIs meet minimum standards."

SMRT captain sent to CGH after lightning strikes MRT train on East-West Line

0

A train captain was sent to Changi General Hospital (CGH) after lightning reportedly struck an MRT train on the East-West Line after 4pm today (Nov 20).

In response to Stomp media queries, a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said SCDF was alerted at 4.20pm, and one ambulance was dispatched to Tanah Merah MRT Station.

A man was conveyed to CGH "in a conscious and alert state", said the spokesperson.

The Straits Times reported on the lightning strike at 5.30pm today and said that the incident resulted in journey times between Tanah Merah and Paya Lebar stations to be delayed for at least 10 minutes.

The newspaper understands that the affected train has been withdrawn from service.

Here is SMRT's statement in full:

"A westbound train heading towards the city stalled as it was approaching Bedok MRT station. Passengers were detrained at Bedok station, and the train was withdrawn from service for investigation. After the incident, the Train Captain, who said he was unwell, is receiving medical attention.

"In response to media queries, we are currently investigating this incident as a possible lightning strike.

"We would like to share that each train is protected by a "Faraday Cage". This is an enclosure formed by conductive material that blocks electric fields and electric currents such as lightning strikes. The cage conducts current around the outside of the enclosed space with none passing through the interior. If lightning strikes, the electric current will travel through the outside shell of the train, not through the cabin, and pass through the wheels to the track. The train is grounded to the track."

In a previous incident on May 11, 2016, a train on the North-South Line was crippled by lightning, disrupting southbound services between Yishun and Yio Chu Kang stations.

Trains on surface lines are occasionally struck by lightning but SMRT has said that occupants are protected and unlikely to be injured in such an event.

Frustrated by her lack of dates, 26-year-old Kelly Lim decided to put together a new dating profile -- in the form of presentation slides.

The funeral undertaker is no stranger to being featured in the media, primarily due to her unusual trade for someone of her demographic.

She is also currently awaiting acceptance into medical school overseas, where she will major in mortuary science.

In an Instagram post yesterday (Nov 20), Kelly shared a six-slide presentation titled "Why you should swipe right".

The presentation consisted of Kelly's background and achievements, as well as many other impressive qualities.

But what really stood out was her sense of humour in the slides e.g. "I create my own memes because my life is a joke."

Well, it seems like Kelly's presentation has certainly gotten the attention it deserves.
